The Apprentice Teacher
"The apprentice phase begins when the teacher plans, delivers, and assesses all lessons, and assumes full responsibility for managing students’ learning and behavior. For a few teachers, the apprentice phase begins in student teaching; for most, it will begin when they have been hired for their first teaching job and start the school year." (Life Cycle of the Career Teacher 2000, 48)

Teachers who are hired with probationary certification, or who begin full-time teaching responsibilities with limited coursework and field experience, may be apprentices without ever having been novices and have the same concerns.
