Chapter Grant Opportunity

Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) is offering an exciting opportunity for individuals and chapters to provide a grant annually to an active member of a local KDP chapter.

A chapter grant provides a grant to an active member of a specific chapter every single year. That’s right—a grant each and every year—indefinitely. Through gifts to the KDP Educational Foundation from chapters, individuals, or a combination of both, KDP will create an endowment so that a grant will be available to award each year. To find out full information about the program please click here.

Through interest, dividends, and capital gains earned on the endowed amount, a grant equal to 5% of the body of the gift will be available to award. This grant can be used for higher education or professional development purposes. The chapter or donor sets the specific requirements, and the local chapter chooses the recipient(s) each year and awards the gift.

Every year, the grant endowment will continue to grow through the generous contributions of the Educational Foundation. Each endowed fund annually receives an allocation from the Foundation’s general endowment in an amount equaling up to 10% of the interest, dividends, and capital gains earned from your grant. This additional contribution will outpace inflation and increase the fund’s value, ultimately increasing the amount awarded. With this generous contribution, the endowment fund could grow up to 50% in 9 years without additional contributions and will double within 16 years, thus allowing the fund to award a larger grant each and every year.

The table below shows the dollar amount of chapter grants that may be established based on various contribution levels. All donations can be given in cash or pledges over the course of five years.

The gift is tax deductible.
The grant can recognize student achievement and service to the chapter.
The chapter or donor chooses the specific requirements for the grant.
The grant amount will increase every year through interest and dividends.
Your chapter will not be burdened to fund-raise every single year for a grant.

To establish this ongoing grant, simply give a gift or make a pledge to the Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation. Pledges and gifts can be made online at www.kdp.org or mailed to KDP Educational Foundation, 3707 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

Chapters may choose to make a pledge, contribute funds from your chapter treasury, hold fund-raisers (visit www.kdp.org for suggestions), donate your chapter rebate check, or solicit your members and alumni. All funds generated by your chapter and earmarked for the grant will count toward the total fund. I will be happy to help your chapter solicit the alumni to contribute to this fund.

If you would like to establish a grant, or need more information or help raising funds, please call Cara Lathrop, Director of Development, at 800-284-3167 or by e-mail at cara@kdp.org. KDP can start your chapter grant with as little as $250.

Kappa Delta Pi Chapter Grant Policies and Procedures

Structure of Account: Contributions to the Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation (herein referred to as the Foundation) designated for a Chapter Grant will be retained in the Foundation endowment under a restricted account name. 100% of donations restricted to the chapter grant will be deposited into the chapter grant fund. Each year, up to 10% of interest, dividends, and capital gains will be credited to your account. Up to 5% will be distributed as the grant and up to 5% will be kept in your fund to outpace inflation.

Distribution of Funds: Up to 5% of the endowed amount will be available annually for distribution. Monies cannot be distributed until full funding has been in place for at least 12 months. When full funding is complete, the chapter counselor chooses whether the grant should be distributed in March or October. Each year, one month prior to distribution, the local chapter should request the money from the Foundation. The check will be payable to the local grant recipient(s).

Use of Funds: All funds must be used in accordance with the mission of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) and the restrictions set forth by the chapter grant. All recipients of the grant must be active members of KDP and the designated chapter. The recipient’s name and address and the specific purpose of the grant must be sent to the Foundation before the check can be sent.

Funds Not Distributed: Any grant monies not requested remain in the body of the established fund and will be part of the principal of the fund for the following fiscal year. All funds given to the Foundation are considered gifts and cannot be revoked or returned. In the event that the chapter is suspended or disbanded, the donor will have the opportunity to recommend that the funds be made available to KDP for other deserving projects. The Foundation Board must approve the recommendation for the use of the funds. The Board has the right to restrict or alter the use of the chapter grant funds from any suspended or disbanded chapter or any chapter that isn’t using the funds in accordance with the KDP mission.

Investments and Chapter Grant Awards: KDP will select the investment portfolio for the monies received based on the needs of the Society or the Foundation. Grant amounts may vary depending on the market value. A maximum of 5% percent of the interest earned, dividends, and realized gains on the body of the gift will be available for distribution. Up to an additional 5% of interest, dividends, and realized gains will be placed in the fund annually for the purpose of outpacing inflation. Any additional extra interest earned, dividends, or realized gains will be placed into the Foundation’s general fund. Chapter grants will be awarded as long as the Foundation exists.
